Is Astrophotography Right for You?
- Physical demands: Low physical intensity, but you'll be outdoors in the cold and dark for hours. Dressing warmly and staying comfortable during long imaging sessions is a real consideration.
- Time commitment: A single imaging session runs 2–6 hours, typically starting after astronomical twilight (about 90 minutes after sunset). Post-processing (stacking and editing) adds another 2–5 hours per image. This is not a quick hobby.

The Canon Rebel T7 is one of the most popular beginner DSLRs for astrophotography because it has a large APS-C sensor, excellent community support, and a huge ecosystem of affordable lenses. What to Expect in Your First 3 Months
Your first night out, you'll fumble with tripod setup in the dark, forget which direction is north, and your first image will probably be out of focus. That's normal. By your third session, you'll have a routine: check the weather, scout your location on Google Maps during the day, arrive before sunset to set up, and use a star-finding app to locate the Milky Way core.
In the first month, focus on nailing wide-field Milky Way shots. Learn to manually focus on a bright star using live view zoom (the LCD at 10x magnification).
