About GearGate

Honest gear advice for people starting new hobbies. No fluff, no affiliate padding.

Who Made This

GearGate started with a simple frustration: every time we tried to pick up a new hobby, we ended up drowning in "best gear" listicles that recommended 47 products when we only needed 5. Half the links were out of stock, and the recommendations seemed designed to maximize commissions rather than help beginners.

So the GearGate team built what we wished existed: a single, clear page for each hobby that tells you exactly what to buy across three realistic budget tiers. Think of us as the Wirecutter for hobbyists — except we focus on the awkward "I'm just starting out, what do I actually need?" phase that most gear sites skip over.

We're a small editorial team. We research gear, talk to experienced hobbyists, compare real-world pricing, and update our recommendations when better options appear.

How We Pick Gear

We don't recommend everything. Our process:

  • Three tiers, not one. Budget, Sweet Spot, and All-In. Because "the best" depends entirely on how committed you are and what you can spend.
  • Real prices, updated regularly. We check pricing every few months and swap out discontinued products. If a price has changed significantly, we'll update the page.
  • Skip-this lists. Every hobby page includes items beginners commonly waste money on. We'd rather save you $100 than earn a commission.
  • No pay-for-placement. Brands don't pay to appear on GearGate. Our picks are based on value, durability, and how well a product serves someone in their first 3–6 months.
  • Community input. Our reviews page lets real beginners share their experiences, which helps us refine our recommendations over time.

Affiliate Disclosure

Transparency matters to us. Some links on GearGate are affiliate links to Amazon and other specialty retailers. When you click one of these links and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

This revenue helps us keep the site running, but it does not influence which products we recommend. We pick gear based on value and quality for beginners, not commission rates. If a product isn't worth your money, it won't appear on our pages — regardless of what it would earn us.

Affiliate links on this site are marked with rel="nofollow" and open in a new tab. If you'd prefer to support us without clicking affiliate links, you can always buy us a coffee instead.
